Recessed lighting offers a very clean and crisp solution for lighting rooms and features. Recessed lights are usually fitted between ceiling joists or into small holes created in the ceiling especially for them. You will need to make sure the recessed light fixtures are rated for insulation use if they are positioned near any form of insulation. Before installing these lights there are a few things to take into account.
The first is the gap between each light. You do not want to place them too close to each other, or in rows down the center of the room. A good guide to follow is that 4 inch fixtures should be about 4 feet apart, and 6 inch fixtures at about 6 feet apart. Whatever you are intending to highlight, such as paintings or ornaments, then place the light at least 12 inches away from them. For a better effect you can position two or three fixtures from different angles to light up fireplaces or other three dimensional objects. Buying them is very simple as there are many stores that stock them. Argos has a good reputation for these types of lights but you can get them from all sorts of places.
The bulbs are very important as well. Incandescent bulbs give a good level of light and are pretty cheap to buy. Halogen bulbs are a bit more expensive and give a nice clean reflection. You can buy lower wattage bulbs if you want a softer feel and focus. You can also connect them to a dimmer switch for more control. Such bulbs are also available from argos direct or at any good home improvement store. You can buy colored reflectors which can quickly change the mood of the entire room with the flick of a switch. Many people choose neutral colors such as soft blues and greens. More high tech installations can even change the lighting colors automatically.
