Solar Garden Lights as Functional Garden Decor

by Perry Latham

Garden lights serve as both garden decor items and functional devices that help people find their way through walkways and paths. Multiple light designs and models are available through home improvement retailers and online garden appliance shops. Customers often purchase lights in group packages that contain several matching units, though some people choose to buy single garden lighting that provide much more cover to a larger area. Designs vary in shape, size and method of electrical output.

Solar garden lights have solar panels on the flat surfaces that are exposed to sunlight during the day. This method allows purchasers to use a wireless approach, leaving more space in the garden and less work to do during the installation process. Lights that use solar panel technology often provide bright light throughout the night, though on days where sunlight gets limited by cloud cover, lighting may be minimal. Garden light systems that require the use of electrical cords and central power unit can be more of a hassle to install but usually provide more consistent and brighter light during the night. These lights can also use timers so the garden decor pieces turn off and on during designated times throughout the day and night.

Solar garden light sets often provide a lighting effect to a limited circumference of space, which is why they are usually bought and sold in packages. Replacement parts for lights are usually easy to find and cost minimal amounts; the bulbs of the lights often go out before the lights become damaged or broken in any other way. Buying several light sets also provides the home owner with more options to decorate the garden space. In many cases, more than one package of lighting units is needed to cover an entire walkway effectively. Other lighting options for decorating include spreading the lights throughout a garden in a random arrangement or placing lights under larger plants and trees.

While solar garden lighting is commonly found along pathways and in garden beds, they can be used to line a long driveway so drivers have an indication to where the edge of the pavement lies. Garden lights are also effective for brightening work spaces and facilities like small sheds and porches. Individual lights work well in single planters that may be placed on or near tables. This allows people to enjoy a night out with optimal lighting and vision to carry out activities and entertainment.
